How much does an uninsured car cost in Sweden? TFF fee calculator

Use this calculator to work out what an uninsured vehicle costs in Sweden, per day or over a period. Choose the vehicle type and enter the first and last uninsured day to get an estimate of the traffic insurance fee (trafikförsäkringsavgift, also called motor insurance fee) charged by TFF (Trafikförsäkringsföreningen, the Swedish Motor Insurers). It is an estimate only – your actual fee may differ slightly.

What does an uninsured car cost in Sweden?

For an ordinary private passenger car the daily fee is 202 SEK. The fee is charged per day and grows quickly, but steps down if the car stays uninsured for a long time:

Uninsured forFee, private passenger car
1 day202 SEK
7 days1,414 SEK
30 days6,060 SEK
90 days18,180 SEK
180 days27,270 SEK
1 year (365 days)36,705 SEK

From day 91 the daily fee drops to 50 percent, and from day 181 to 25 percent. The lowest amount for a new fee is 200 SEK. Other vehicle types have other daily fees – see the table further down.

Is there a fine or penalty for an uninsured car in Sweden?

Many people experience the fee as a fine, but legally it is a fee, not a penalty. For a car that is on the road (påställd) and has no insurance, the normal consequence is the traffic insurance fee that TFF charges for every uninsured day (§34 of the Traffic Damage Act). The county administrative board (länsstyrelsen) can also order the owner to take out insurance, on penalty of a conditional fine (vite) (§35).

A criminal fine (penningböter) can follow, however, if a car that is off the road (avställd) or not registered is used in traffic without traffic insurance (§36). The safest course is always to take out insurance, or to take the car off the road if it won't be used. Read more about the uninsured car in Sweden.

How the daily fee is calculated

TFF calculates the fee per day and vehicle type, under §34 of the Traffic Damage Act. Each vehicle type and use has its own daily fee, based on the actual premiums insurers charge for vehicles in that category – not your specific vehicle's make, model year, bonus, or address. Been uninsured a long time? The fee automatically steps down: to 50 percent of the standard amount from day 91, and to 25 percent from day 181, with a floor of 7 SEK a day. The lowest total amount TFF charges for a new fee is 200 SEK.

Frequently asked questions about the calculation

Which days should I count?

The first day is the first day the vehicle was on the road and uninsured, for example the date of the ownership change. The last day is the last day the vehicle was uninsured – not the day the insurance started or the vehicle was taken off the road, but the day before that.

What happens over longer periods?

If the vehicle has been uninsured for more than 90 days, the calculator automatically lowers the fee, to 50 percent from day 91 and 25 percent from day 181, just like TFF's own calculation.

Is the result exact?

No, it's an estimate based on TFF's published daily fees. Your actual fee may differ slightly depending on exactly what TFF has on record in the vehicle register.
