Invoiced for a classic vehicle or moped in Sweden

QUICK ANSWER

Yes, the fee applies even to vehicles that are rarely or never used – mopeds, motorhomes, and classic vehicles are all subject to the same insurance requirement as long as they're on the road (“påställd” in Swedish). If it's sitting in a barn or garage unused, it has to be taken off the road with the Swedish Transport Agency to stop the fee.

It's common for collectors, cabin owners, and anyone with a seasonal vehicle or an old moped to get a fee for something that's barely moved in years. The rules make no distinction based on how much a vehicle is used.

All registrable vehicles are covered

Mopeds (class 1), motorhomes, motorcycles, and classic vehicles all require insurance the moment they're on the road in the vehicle register – regardless of the vehicle's age, condition, or how rarely it's used. Only driving it in summer, or not at all, doesn't exempt it for the rest of the year if it's still on the road.

The exception is the same as for any other vehicle: if it's off the road, no insurance is needed. The difference is just that seasonal vehicles and collector's items are easy to forget about, since you don't think of them as "in traffic".

Trailers and caravans don't belong here: they don't need traffic insurance of their own, because they're covered by the insurance of the vehicle towing them.

What to do if you've received a fee

Take the vehicle off the road immediately through the Swedish Transport Agency's app or e-service, if it isn't going to be used. That stops new fee days right away. The fee for the period the vehicle has already been on the road and uninsured stands, since taking it off the road can't be backdated.

A lower fee for classic vehicles

Classic vehicles 30 years or older generally get a fee that's 50 percent lower than the standard rate, except for registrable mopeds, tractors, motorized equipment, and off-road vehicles, where the full fee applies. Estimate your situation with the TFF fee calculator, which has a checkbox for classic vehicles.
