The moment a vehicle gets a Swedish registration number, Swedish traffic law applies. Your foreign insurance generally doesn't count anymore, since foreign insurers usually can't or don't report valid cover to the Swedish vehicle register. Your foreign insurance isn't enough
The moment the vehicle gets a Swedish registration number, the Swedish vehicle register sees no valid insurance, whatever applies in the country of origin. Foreign insurers generally don't report into the Swedish system.
The gap at the registration inspection
When the vehicle is approved at the registration inspection and given its Swedish registration number, it's often registered as active at the same time, unless something else is requested. If Swedish insurance isn't already in place on the new number at that point, the fee starts running immediately.
Temporary registration
If a temporary registration is used during the import, it's essential to keep track of exactly when the temporary insurance ends and when the regular Swedish registration takes over, so no gap opens up between the two.
Checklist
Take out Swedish insurance on the vehicle's chassis or VIN number ahead of the inspection – many insurers offer this. Tell your insurer the Swedish registration number as soon as you get it, so the policy is linked to the right vehicle in the register. Is the vehicle going to sit unused after the inspection, for example for restoration? Make an off road notification for it with the Swedish Transport Agency right away.
