Putting a car back on the road in Sweden – after buying it or for an inspection

QUICK ANSWER

A car that's off the road needs insurance the second it's put back on the road (“påställd” in Swedish) – for example when it's put back on the road as part of buying it. If insurance isn't in place at that exact moment, a fee arises immediately. Only driving it to an inspection? Then it can stay off the road – no fee arises, but it still mustn't be driven without insurance.

A car that's off the road suddenly being put back on the road, without it feeling like anything dramatic happened, is a common cause of fees.

Where it goes wrong

Buy a car that's off the road and want to drive it home the same day, and you'll often put it back on the road as part of the ownership change. Do that in the Swedish Transport Agency's app, and the car is on the road the instant you click. If you don't already have insurance active at that moment, the car is uninsured from that exact second – and the fee counts from that day.

The same applies if you put the car back on the road to drive it to an inspection: from that moment, it needs traffic insurance.

How to avoid it

Take out the insurance before you put the car back on the road, or before you complete an ownership change that puts it back on the road – never afterwards.

Good to know

A car that's off the road may be driven the shortest reasonable route to the nearest inspection company, and it doesn't have to be put back on the road for that. As long as it stays off the road, no traffic insurance fee arises. But it still has to be insured for the trip – driving a car that's off the road without insurance isn't allowed and can lead to a fine, and if you cause damage on the way you could end up paying for it yourself.
