A fee for a vehicle that's currently off the road almost always comes down to a few days right before the off road notification took effect – not the off road notification itself being wrong. TFF only charges for the days the vehicle was registered as active in the vehicle register.
It feels baffling to get an invoice for a car sitting off the road in the garage. The explanation is almost always a few days just before the off road notification went through, rarely the notification itself being incorrect.
The most common causes
A gap at the ownership change: you bought the car and ticked "off road notification" on the paper form at the same time. The ownership change applies from the date you wrote down, but the off road notification only from the day the letter reached the Transport Agency – often a few days later. Notification sent by post: if you only submitted an off road notification, with the original registration certificate, it applies from the day the Transport Agency received and registered the letter – not the day you mailed it. Postal delivery can take several days, and those days count as the vehicle being active.
A short delay before the off road notification: the vehicle was active and uninsured for a few days before you got around to reporting it off the road.
How to check whether the fee is correct
Log in to the Swedish Transport Agency's app or e-service and check exactly which date the vehicle was registered as off the road, and which date the ownership change applies from. Compare these with the period TFF is charging for. In almost every case, they cover exactly the same days.
If the dates in the register match the fee, it's correct – pay it, and make sure the vehicle stays off the road until it's actually going to be used again. If it turns out the off-road date in the register is wrong – for example, the application actually arrived earlier than the fee assumes – the Swedish Transport Agency corrects that record. TFF updates the fee automatically once the register changes.
