Ownership change and taking a car off the road on the paper form

QUICK ANSWER

In Sweden, if you report an ownership change and take the car off the road on the same paper form, the ownership change applies from the date you wrote down – but the car only counts as off the road from the day the letter reaches the Swedish Transport Agency. In between, the car is on the road in your name and uninsured. Report through the app instead, where the car goes off the road immediately.

This is the trap that costs the most people the most money, because they did everything they thought they were supposed to. The car was going to be taken off the road, after all.

Where it goes wrong

The problem is that the Swedish Transport Agency treats the two pieces of information on the paper form differently. The ownership change applies from the date you wrote, but taking the car off the road only counts once the letter arrives.

Report the ownership change and take the car off the road on the same paper form, and the ownership change applies from Monday – but the car only goes off the road when the letter reaches the Transport Agency, here on Thursday. The three days in between, the car is on the road and uninsured.
Monday – you buy the car, fill in the paper form, and tick the box to take it off the road. The letter is posted.
Monday – the ownership change applies from today, per the date you wrote.
Thursday – the letter arrives. Only now does the car go off the road.
Monday through Wednesday – the car was on the road, registered to you, and uninsured. These are the days TFF charges for.

The Swedish Transport Agency says this themselves: taking a car off the road applies from the day a complete report arrives, and the new owner has to take out insurance covering the time up until then. It can't be backdated.

How to avoid it

Report the ownership change in the Swedish Transport Agency's app or e-service, and take the car off the road there. It then goes off the road the moment you report, and the gap never opens up. If you have to use the paper form: take out insurance from the ownership-change date, and cancel it as soon as the app shows the car as off the road. A modest premium for a few days is cheaper than 202 kronor a day.

Good to know

You can't take a car off the road and put it back on the road on the same day. In letters and on its English pages, the Swedish Transport Agency calls taking a car off the road an “off road notification” – it's the same thing. Just changing owner, without taking the car off the road? See traffic insurance when changing ownership of a vehicle in Sweden.
