Insurance in someone else's name on a car in Sweden

QUICK ANSWER

The insurance policy has to be in the registered owner's name. If it's in someone else's name, like a parent's, the vehicle counts as uninsured even though the premium is being paid. The owner is then the one who gets a fee from TFF.

It's common for a parent to take out the policy for a young driver's first car, to get a lower premium. It's a widespread misunderstanding, and it can end up costing the owner directly.

Why this happens

The Swedish Transport Agency and TFF run an automatic data match: who owns the vehicle, and who holds the insurance policy on it. If those are two different people, the system sees it as no valid insurance at all for the registered owner – regardless of whether a premium is being paid every month by someone else.

What to do about it

Move the policy into the owner's name today, so no new fee days are added. The fee for the days that have already passed generally stands, since it's tied to who was the registered owner, not to who paid the premium.

Is it actually a young driver's first car, with a parent involved for cost reasons? See a first car – for parents and children for how to keep the premium down without breaking this rule.
