QUICK ANSWER
In Sweden, the traffic insurance fee is charged for every day a car is on the road without traffic insurance. The fastest way to stop it is to take out new traffic insurance today. If your company cancelled your policy over an unpaid premium, go to a different company – most won't restart a cancelled policy until they see the payment. If you won't be using the car, you can take it off the road instead.
Only two things stop new fee days: the car getting traffic insurance in the owner's name, or the car being taken off the road. Nothing else – paying the invoice, calling TFF or leaving the car parked – does. So start here, and sort out the rest afterwards.
Need the car? Take out new traffic insurance
Most insurers let you sign up online at any time of day, and the policy can start the same day. It has to be in the registered owner's name – if it's in someone else's, the car still counts as uninsured (see insurance in someone else's name). As a rule, you can't be refused traffic insurance, because insurers have a duty to contract (kontraheringsplikt).
Did your insurer cancel the policy over an unpaid premium?
Choose a different company. Most insurers won't restart a cancelled policy until they actually see your payment arrive, which can take anywhere from a few hours to several banking days – even if you pay right away. Meanwhile the car is uninsured and the fee keeps running. A company you don't owe anything to has no reason to wait, and can usually start the policy immediately.
Switching companies doesn't make the old debt disappear. The unpaid premium, and the fee for the days that have already passed, need to be sorted out separately – see invoiced despite having insurance.
Has the car had no insurance at all?
Take out a policy right away. It doesn't matter why it's missing – insurance forgotten after a purchase, an ownership change that went wrong, or a car that has just been sitting – every new day is added to the fee until the insurance is in place. You can work out why it happened once the fee has stopped.
Don't need the car? Take it off the road
A car that's off the road needs no traffic insurance. Do it in the Swedish Transport Agency's app or e-service, and it takes effect immediately. If you send it by post, it only applies from the day the letter arrives, and the days in between count (see invoiced for a car that's off the road). Remember that a car that's off the road can't be driven, and that you can't put it back on the road on the same day you took it off the road.
What doesn't stop the fee
Paying TFF's invoice doesn't stop new days – the payment only covers days that have already passed (see paid the invoice – is the car insured now?). Paying the old premium doesn't stop them either, until the insurer has registered the payment and restarted the policy. And a car that's on the road has to be insured even if it's just parked.
Once the fee has stopped
Only once the car is insured or off the road is it time to work out what went wrong. Start by contacting your insurer – their records are what TFF goes by. Want to know what the days that have already passed might cost? Use the TFF fee calculator. What it means to have an uninsured car is explained in what happens if the car is uninsured?
